Longboard Cruise – Orwell to Alde :)
What a crap couple of days it’s been first on Friday our lovely old cat
Holly dies a very sad day as she has been a member of our family for nearly
21 years, there is a huge gap now on our settee and we miss her so much
then on Saturday Maggie wakes with a bad headache takes some mega strength
tablets and is promptly sick and she is never sick! After Saturdays mostly
cloudy day we wake to a nice sunny day and the tree opposite is moving
nicely, I check the landguard station and I find a NW (dead offshore) 12/15
knots, with Mag still feeling under the weather I have a quick breakfast
and head to The Dip. As no one sails in an offshore wind I have it all to
myself. I rig 9.4 for the longboard, take my rucksack with a drink,
chocolate bar and my small camera with the aim to go for a cruise up the
coast. It is a wobbly start off the beach and the wind is disappointingly
light so I rule out going far at this point and headed to Bawdsey Bay where
I played for an hour in the very gusty wind, stopping to take some pics of
the Manor House and a snack.
The wind filled in a little so I was able to beat down to the River Orwell
by Felixstowe Docks managing to get nicely in the straps:) I didn’t think
it windy enough to cross the shipping channel so turned and started the
reach back, you could slowly plan with the track forward, I was going well
so continued all the way to the cottages at Shingle Street all of nine
miles! I saw the pond created by shingle in front of the cottages a popular
spot with kitesurfers and there was one out in the lagoon but it is very
small and not really suitable for windsurfers so is not worth the long
drive there. I watched the kiter,SUP and holiday makers for a while before
starting the bet back. I spotted a seal on the Shingle at Bawdsey before
facing the gusty beat back to the van.
I packed up then had a cuppa with Mr and Mrs Smalling in their lovely
camper, a nice 4.50 hours on the water even if the wind didn’t play ball!
July has been a good month for windsurfing, best of the year so far with 13
sessions :)
